Why Material Selection Fails Valves

Most valve failures are not mechanical — they are chemical. The wrong body or trim material corrodes, galls, or embrittles long before the pressure rating is exceeded. Material choice starts with the fluid, not the pressure class.

Common Valve Materials

  • WCB / A216: carbon steel, the general-purpose workhorse for non-corrosive services.
  • LCB / LCC: low-temperature carbon steel for cryogenic and cold-climate duty.
  • CF8 (304): austenitic stainless for mild corrosion and food/pharma.
  • CF8M (316): molybdenum-bearing stainless, better pitting resistance.
  • CF3M (316L): low-carbon version for welded construction.

Trim Matters More Than Body

The trim (ball, seat, stem, disc) sees the highest velocity and most aggressive fluid. A carbon-steel body with stellited or tungsten-carbide trim can outlast an all-stainless body with soft trim in slurry service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 316 stainless always better than 304 for valves?

Not always. 316 (CF8M) resists pitting and chloride better, but for clean water or dry gas, 304 (CF8) is usually sufficient and cheaper.

What material handles seawater best?

For seawater, Duplex stainless and Monel are excellent; 316 is only fair due to chloride pitting. Bronze is acceptable but less durable.

Can I use carbon steel for steam?

Yes. WCB and equivalent carbon steels are widely used for saturated and superheated steam within their pressure-temperature limits.
