Engineer's Selection Guide: Globe Valves

Globe valves are linear-motion valves intended for throttling and regulating flow, at the cost of higher pressure drop than gate or ball valves. Selection focuses on trim type, flow-characteristic (linear/equal-percentage), body pattern (Z, Y, angle), and material compatibility for the service.

• For throttling and regulating duties an equal-percentage plug suits most process control; for severe throttling with cavitation risk specify an anti-cavitation or noise-reduction trim.
• In high-temperature steam service an angle-pattern globe valve reduces piping elbows and thermal stress at the inlet, and a Y-pattern body lowers the pressure drop versus a standard Z-body.
